To paint or not to paint?
I’ve been getting my home ready the last couple of days for participating in a few Fall home tours. As part of my preparations, I wanted a table to put in my entryway that felt a little more earthy than the gold and glass number I had there all summer. After all, fall seems like a really earthy time, right?

So, I did a little shopping right here at home, and came up with this pretty painted table. I had purchased it a number of years ago at a little vintage boutique. It was made out of oak, had been spray painted creamy white, and then sanded to within an inch of it’s life. I didn’t love the finished, but also didn’t relish the idea of stripping it. So I used it that way for a couple of years.
A year or two ago, I decided to paint the table a soft teal color. I loved how the paint emphasized the little scallop detail around the apron. I used it that way for a year, and the table made the rounds – first sitting in my living room, then moving down to a guest bedroom, and later to the family room in the basement.
But you know me – I love to change things up, and I wanted to use that table in all its unpainted glory!
So, two days, a can of paint stripper, and lots of elbow grease later – I ended up with my pretty little unfinished table. I love it, and I’m going to keep it this way for a while (promise!). I may end up putting a sealer on it, or something, but I really love the raw, natural look right now. I realize that it’s still a little rough. It could use a little more sanding to get every last bit of paint out of the nooks and crannies, but I actually kind of like it this way. I may eventually clean it up a little more, but for now I’m happy.
I guess the moral of this story is – nothing is ever final! If you don’t like a piece of furniture in it’s current state, try painting it. Or stripping it if it’s already painted! It can always be repainted (or stripped) again. Might as well be adventurous and try out all your options, right?!
And I just love the contrast of a crisp, white sofa or chair next to an unfinished, or reclaimed wood piece. I think it really makes both the table and the settee absolutely pop.
