I’m nearing the end of a fun design project right here in my neck of the woods – the Midway Townhouse Project. The project involved designing a cozy second home/mountain escape for a sweet-as-pie couple from Minnesota.

They bought the townhome as part of a whirlwind trip over their Christmas break. By the time they contacted me, we had exactly three hours on the day before Christmas Eve to meet and go over their design preferences, as well as some of the work that needed to be done on the home (new carpet, new light fixtures, extended slate flooring, new kitchen backsplash, and all new paint). Whew! That’s a lot to learn in three short hours!

This couple lives full time in Minnesota, and since they have family out this way, they decided to invest in a vacation property here. They chose beautiful Midway, Utah, as their place of preference, and ended up falling in love with the rustic qualities of the townhouse.

Slate floors, rough-hewn travertine ledgestone on the backsplash, and stained doors, trim, and cabinetry all felt appropriate to them for a mountain vacation home. They requested furniture and decor that would help them enjoy the rustic feel of their retreat, so we went with some leather, copper and gold touches, and lots of natural textures in rugs and furniture finishes to help them feel like they are vacationing in the mountains, without screaming “cabin”.

Because the couple doesn’t have any children at home, and because this is a vacation getaway for them, their desires consisted mostly of a cozy place to sit and read, a place to watch movies, a dining area that could accommodate their local family, a master bedroom retreat, and a welcoming guest room.

The family room with its slate floors, ledgestone fireplace, and leather seating will provide plenty of space for cozy family time, movie watching, and just plain relaxing in their mountain retreat.

We went with a natural finish table, hemp rug, and leather seating for easy cleanup in the dining area.

The kitchen got a new travertine backsplash in keeping with the rustic feel of the space.

This cool architectural piece invites the homeowners into the second-floor bedroom area.

At the beginning of this post, I asked you what design style you like best. And if you follow me on Instagram, you know that this mountain style isn’t my top pick. But you know what – it happens to be the top pick of my client, and I am so happy that I was able to make them happy, in a home that speaks to their preferences. And at the end of the day, that’s what a designer’s job is all about. Creating a home that a client loves, is comfortable in, and expresses their design personality. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of designing a space that was totally different from my own style, but still every bit as comfortable and beautiful, and the homeowners are just thrilled with their new vacation haven.
