DIY Mini Cedar Wreath
I have a fun and easy project for you today, just in case you’re wondering what to do with your time now that the Thanksgiving rush is over (yeah, right!). A few simple ingredients are all you’ll need to deck your halls with these little cuties.
Gather up these things and we’ll get started:
- 6″ grapevine wreath
- 24″ length of ribbon (could be shorter or longer depending on your needs)
- clippings from your backyard. I used cedar, but you could use boxwood, pine, etc.
- floral wire
- wire cutter
- hot glue gun/glue sticks
Start by gathering your clippings. I went in my backyard, which is a forest of cedar trees. I clipped a bunch of 4″ lengths of cedar and gathered them in a grocery bag. It took a half to 3/4 of a bag for one 6″ wreath. This works wonderfully with boxwood clippings, but sadly I don’t have any of those on hand! I think you could also use many other types of evergreen clippings – go take a walk and see what you come up with!
Once you have your clippings and all your other supplies gathered, start by holding two or three clippings in your hand. Hold the clippings against the top of the wreath, and wrap the wire all the way around the base of the clippings and the wreath. I think it’s easiest to start at the top of the wreath and work your way around, laying the next group of clippings about 2″ down from top ofthe first group. Work your way all around the wreath. When you reach your starting point, lift up the first clump and nestle your last group of clippings against its base. Once you have the top of the wreath covered, move to the center of the wreath and repeat the same process.
After you have covered the wreath, you can go back and hot glue a few clippings in if you have bald spots on your wreath. You may also need to give some of the errant clippings a little trim – or not if you like the slightly wild look!
Now all you need to do is finish by looping your ribbon through the center of the wreath and gluing the end of the ribbon to the back of the hanging part of the ribbon.
Hang your beautiful new wreath on a door, cabinet doors, or china cabinet door. It will bring a little spot of holiday cheer to any area of your home!
