Are you in the process of choosing the perfect rug to accent one of the rooms in your home? I have some ideas that might help you find that special rug.

I recently shopped for a new rug for the entryway in my home, so I know how tough that decision can be. I thought I’d share 3 easy tips to help you choose your next perfect rug!
Tip #1: Consider the overall feel you want for your space.
My entry is light and bright, but because of the white walls and the tall ceilings, it would be easy for it to lean towards impersonal and cold. To guard against that, I knew I needed to add some warmth and personality to this space. A well-loved vintage rug was the perfect piece to add character to an otherwise new and neutral space. It instantly added a sense of age that I think is important in any space. You definitely don’t want a furniture showroom vibe going one, and that’s where vintage rugs really shine. They add that one-of-a-kind, special feel to a space.
So decide the feel you want your space to exude – warm and inviting? fun and unique? restrained and chic? Then choose a rug that feels that way too – it’ll set the tone for your room.
I found this beautiful vintage rug at Revival Rugs They offer a wonderful selection of high quality vintage rugs at really affordable prices. Revival Rugs offers all types of rugs, from bright kilims that will fill your room with fun patterns, to soft neutral Turkish rugs that will acts as lovely soft backgrounds for the rest of your furnishings. For my entry, I chose this beautiful vintage flatweave Turkish rug because it adds some warm brown tones and a beautiful pattern, but doesn’t take over the space.
Figure out what role your rug should be playing, and choose based on that decision.
Tip #2: Consider the size
I chose to go with a long, wide runner in my entry. It fits between the legs of the console table at one end, and under the upholstered ottoman on the other.
Size is always important when it comes to rugs. Too small of a rug will look like you missed the mark and went cheap. Too large of a rug can overwhelm your space.
A good general rule to follow is that you want to be able to rest at least the front legs of the furniture on the rug, rather than having a small rug floating in the center of a furniture grouping. On the opposite end of the spectrum, make sure there is at least a foot of floor showing around the edges of your rug.
A rug is the perfect anchor for a seating area. You can also place a rug under the foot of a bed for a great bedroom anchor, under a dining table to define the dining space. Just make sure you make the rug large enough that you can comfortably pull the chairs back from the table without going off the rug.
Tip #3: Think about who will be using the rug
When considering what type of rug to get for your room, think about who will be using the room and how the rug will function in the space.
A flatweave rug is perfect for a kitchen runner, a hallway runner, and an entryway. Because they’re not super thick, they won’t interfere with the opening of doors, food won’t get lost in them (when used in a kitchen), and they’re easy to keep clean in high-traffic areas.
In living rooms and bedrooms, you might want to go with something a little fluffier and softer for comfort – maybe a wool pile rug or a textural jute or sisal.
Think about how you use your room, and that should help you decide what type of rug you want to use. Soft rugs are great for places you might be walking on with bare feet, or spaces where your kids may be lying on the floor to play with toys, etc.
