Today I’m showing you four easy tips for styling a casual coffee table for fall. Come on in and let’s chat!
First of all, let me say there there are basically four things that you’ll almost always find on my coffee table no matter what the season. Those are the things that this fall table is built around, and I’ll pass along some tips for styling them on your coffee table.
1. I always start with a tray
In this case, I’m using a large, square reclaimed wood tray. I like using trays on the coffee table because they help to round up lots of items and make them feel like a cohesive whole. The tray might change, but right now I’m loving this reclaimed wood tray for it’s large size and it’s rustic quality. I always like to juxtapose rustic with refined finishes for interest and texture. The rustic tray against the refined marble coffee table (you can read more about my marble coffee table here) is really eye-pleasing and interesting.
Trays are a great way to corral the collections that you style, too. So if you have a collection of trophies, vases, clocks, or whatever, try bringing them all together in a tray. Stagger the heights by placing some of the items on stacks or books or another simple pedestal for interest.
2. Magazines and/or books
I love having a stack of current magazines and a few interesting books on my coffee table. It makes for a quick and easy read when I have a few minutes to take a break, and it is something interesting that guests can pick up and look at if I get called away for a few minutes. I have a couple of design books in the tray, as well as a stack of shelter magazines and a few other magazines I enjoy. The books and magazines also come in handy for adding height as you’re styling your collections.
3. A plant or flowers for color
I don’t live very close to a great supply of fresh flowers, so I usually rely on a pretty houseplants or some flower snipped from the yard. In this case, I have both a plant and some flowers on my fall coffee table. The plant is a succulent that I planted into the white pumpkin. Its easy to tie your plant into your seasonal decor via the vessel you have it displayed in. As you can see, the white pumpkin ties in perfectly with my fall decor. The cute little poppies are wildflowers that we have growing next to our stone walls. Their bright orange color ties them in perfectly with my fall decor touches, and they’re an easy styling element.
4. A seasonal decor item
I like using the other side of my coffee table to incorporate some kind of seasonal item. Since it’s fall, I thought a pretty mug of hearty soup was the perfect fall touch (and since it was chilly here yesterday, it was extra appealing)! Of course, the bowl of soup is very temporary, and when it’s gone (which it already is!), I’ll fill that space with more pumpkins, gourds, or Indian corn styled on a pretty dish or tray. I just loved the little fall mug and thought it looked so homey on my table.
Here’s a shot of a seasonal item replacing the mug of soup. In this case, I used another tray – this one gold and shiny to counterbalance the rustic one, and lined up some tiny white pumpkins on it. Quick and easy!
