Kitchen Design Trends for 2018 – If you’re a follower of mine on Instagram (and if not, what are you waiting for?!) then you know how much I love a good kitchen. Even though it’s cliche, it’s true that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Today I’m exploring some of the kitchen trends that, even though they might not be brand new, are still going strong as we enter 2018.
Kitchen Design Trend #1: More color in the kitchen
White kitchens have been HUGE for the past several years, and I think will always be strong because they’re just plain classic. But there has been a trend for a while towards adding some color to a white kitchen, as evidenced in these kitchens. And I’m not talking just light gray cabinets – today’s kitchens are adding bold expanses of color, often to islands or base cabinets while keeping uppers white (or using no uppers at all!).
Kitchen Design Trend #2: Unique cabinet doors
Shaker-style cabinet doors have reigned supreme for quite a while now because of their classic, clean lines. But lately I’ve been seeing more flush front cabinet doors, doors with carved grooves, and even doors like these stunners below with a raised diamond panel.
Kitchen Design Trend #3: Two-toned finishes
As I mentioned in #1 above, I’m seeing lots more two-toned kitchens – often upper cabinets are white, and lower cabinets or islands are painted a color, or stained. It’s a great way to add dimension and interest to a kitchen.

Kitchen Design Trend #4: Fewer upper cabinets
The movement towards a cleaner look in the kitchen has meant eliminating upper cabinets when they’re not needed for storage space. It really opens up a kitchen and makes it feel so much more spacious.
Kitchen Design Trend #5: Statement hoods
I really love this trend toward statement hoods. It’s another way to add texture, color, and personality to a kitchen, so why not take advantage of it! All of these hoods I’m showing are metals, but I’ve also seen statement hoods out of wood (distressed wood in a farmhouse setting, painted wood, or white shiplapped hoods with stained wood across the bottom).
Kitchen Design Trend #6: Waterfall countertops
It used to be that waterfall countertops were mostly used in modern designs, but I’m loving that they’ve made their way into traditional kitchens as well. They are such an eye-catching feature, and they add such beautiful texture and movement.

Kitchen Design Trend #7: Solid Piece Backsplash
If you’re getting tired of white subway tile as a backsplash, here’s a refreshing option for you – a solid piece of stone for a backsplash! It create a seamless, clean line and works perfectly in a traditional or modern kitchen.
Kitchen Design Trend #8: Warmth from wood
Wood has been making a big resurgence in kitchens for a while now, and I expect this trend to continue. Whether the home is modern, rustic, or traditional, wood adds an extra layer of charm and warmth. And wood is popping up in a variety of ways in today’s kitchens – ceiling beams, islands, floors, and floating shelves just to name a few.
What do you think? Which trend is your favorite? Are you incorporating any of these trends into your kitchen this year? If so, I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
Thanks for stopping by today – have a great day!
